Fit for high school in math - Here's how!

As students transition from elementary school to high school, they should already have basic math skills and an understanding of numbers. Here are the most important points you should master:

  1. Basic arithmetic: You must be able to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with confidence, as mental arithmetic problems and in writing.
  2. Number sense: An understanding of natural numbers, fractions, and decimals is important. You should be able to calculate with these numbers, compare them and arrange them. Number sense also includes writing numbers as words and writing number words correctly with numbers.
  3. Solve text problems: You should be able to understand and solve everyday mathematical problems. This includes recognizing key words, identifying the mathematical operations needed, and translating the information into mathematical expressions. Calculation trees can be helpful to calculate a task.
  4. Geometric basics: You should recognize geometric shapes such as circles, squares, rectangles and triangles and understand their properties. You should know how to measure lengths, calculate simple areas and perimeters.
  5. Units of measurement, calculating with quantities: You should be familiar with the common units for lengths, weights, volumes and times. You must be able to convert between different simple units.
  6. Charts and data: You should be able to interpret charts such as bar graphs and pie charts and derive information from them.
